Ivermectin

Scabies & Ivermectin: A Crucial Pediatric Update! 💡

When a patient complains of intense itching, especially at night, and mentions family members also have it – think *Scabies!* It’s a classic presentation we often see in our OPDs.

While topical treatments are the mainstay, oral Ivermectin is gaining popularity for its efficacy. However, a critical point often overlooked is its use in children!

*Here’s what you MUST remember about Ivermectin in Scabies:*
* *Dosage:* The recommended dose is 200 micrograms/kg body weight, usually as a single dose, repeated after 7-14 days.
* *🚫 CONTRAINDICATED in children weighing less than 15 kg or under 5 years of age!* Giving Ivermectin to these young and small children can be dangerous.

In such pediatric cases, always stick to safe topical treatments like Permethrin cream (5%) or Crotamiton lotion. Prioritizing patient safety, especially for our little ones, is paramount!
