🐾 Ivermectin Toxicity in Dogs & Cats: What Pet Owners Should Know 🐾
Ivermectin is a common medication used to treat skin diseases, worms etc. but if given in higher than normal dose or to sensitive animals, it can be severely harmful. Here’s what you should know:
📊 Overdose:
Pets can be overdosed if higher dose is given to the pet or if a dog or cat consumes excreta (poop) of a larger animal who has been dewormed with Ivermectin eg. horses.
If overdosed, it can affect the neurological system causing shaking, weakness, sudden blindness and in severe cases coma or death.
⚠️ At-Risk Breeds:
• Collies, Australian Shepheards, German Shepherds, Poodles etc. are extra sensitive.
👁️ Eye Problems:
• High doses can cause blurry vision or even blindness.
• Owners generally notice clumsiness, pets suddenly bumping into things and eyes look ‘weird’ due to dilated pupils.
🩺 What to Do if Overdose Happens:
• If you suspect an overdose, call your vet immediately. STOP giving Ivermectin to your pet.
• Treatment often involves supportive care only.
• Corticosteroids are to be avoided. IV fluids if dehydrated and in severe cases IV fat emulsion is advised (not needed in all cases)
• The good news is that with the right care, there is a possibility of return of vision though not guaranteed.
